A call to arms

Well,more heads than arms, actually.

Just a short note to those of you who would like to contribute knitted hats to our Operation Christmas Child boxes - would you be able to let me have what you have done by the end of the month, please?  We need to know how many boxes we are going to be able to fill, and it sort of depends on the hat situation - we can make scarves very quickly from fleece throws, but hats take a wee bit more time!

I have had an army of people knitting - old church friends who have moved away, the FH's cousin's wife, a few neighbours, and some of the ladies at the chapel group, but not many....and I've knitted some, but not as many as I managed last year.  A very heartfelt thank you to you all.

I've perked up a little, and life is not looking quite as hard work as it felt at the weekend.  These ups and downs are going to come and go, I think, and I thank all of you for your wise words and kindness.

Have you thought of sewing up fleece hats? http://www.marthastewart.com/265844/fleece-hats

Ang - they look amazing. Sadly my sewing skills are probably not up to much! I shall make a note of the website, though, and it might be that one of the ladies at the chapel who is a whizz on a machine might try next year, or I could even get the YFG to have a go. For me, the knitted hats are perfect as the same pattern fits a small child yet stretches to fit an adult head so they are fine for teenage boxes as well. Thanks for the pattern, though. Very handy to have in the arsenal for next year!

PS to the post for you all - from what I have gathered, early indications are that we have at least 20 hats counting those we have already got and those promised - wow! and thank you all! 20 boxes will be a significant contribution for us to make, and I am very pleased. If we manage any more than that, it will be a bonus xx

I'm surrounded by piles of hats (your pattern - thank you!)and scarves etc too. Our church is a main collection centre for the shoeboxes and deadlines are approaching...

You sound like you are coping with life amazingly well really - don't be too hard on yourself.

So glad you are feeling a bit brighter, you are doing so well at this really difficult time.
Well done on 20 boxes, what a great contribution.
Sorry not to send any hats, but they go to my local group, no postage costs means I can buy more wool. Did you know that if you have any extra items the team who sort & check the shoeboxes will be most grateful for them as additions are often needed. Occasionally an odd box may have a forbidden item, for example something that may break & leak & damage a whole packing box of shoeboxes in transit, this is likely to happen in severe temperatures if a liquid freezes, breaks the container & then leaks when it thaws; or something from the proscribed list may get the whole consignment held up @ customs. That's why they are so specific on what can go into the boxes. The offending item will be replaced with a suitable item, & then used for another charitable purpose, so nothing is ever wasted. Very occasionally a box is a little "light" and needs a top up - extra items so welcome here. The checkers have to look in the box for the financial donation to help with the transport costs, and if there is an internet slip give that to administrators so that the donor can track their shoebox online. Such a lovely charity. Sorry this intended short comment has turned into a long one! Take care of yourself, you are doing great, Vee x

Just glad that people are contributing to this amazing cause - every little helps, they say. Thanks for popping in xxx
