I tried the hot water dissolving method with the laundry powder this morning, and came to the conclusion that perhaps I need to blitz it in the food processor as well - the hot water (and I used boiling water from the kettle) does not actually dissolve the grated soap in my mixture.
I am very pleased with the quality of the cleaning, though, and the pleasant smell which the soap leaves - it is quite faint and the washing I managed to line dry yesterday have a truly lovely line-dried smell - much better than any chemical smell you could add to the wash.
Guess I had better get the blitzing done!

Put an advert on freecycle and see if you can get a freebie, I just got an adjustable swivel chair. It had some paint splashes on the seat, a bit of white spirit and they were soon gone.
For a food processor? I have one, but use it so rarely that it is stored in the overflow that is the garage. I shall have to get in there and get it out! I imagine that it will be OK after a good wash out!
I used to use homemade powder .. and now use a liquid recipe. It's even cheaper to make and you don't have to worry about undissolved soap. I also had problems of the powder 'bleaching' some of my towels .. leaving lighter fade marks from not completely dissolving. I'm not sure if it's the borax or the washing soda. I store the liquid in a 5 gallon plastic bucket with a fitted lid. It can be stirred/whirred every so often with a stick blender if needed right in the bucket.
