Ideas for relatively frugal places to stay if we want to go to visit the EFG for a few days please? Probably travelling by train, so not in the middle of nowhere, but car hire a possibility....Self-catering would be useful too. If you have students there yourself, where have you stayed? If you are a native, where are the places you would recommend please?
I'm asking because the lovely flat we stayed in in March is already booked out :( Not quick enough off the mark with that one. The YFG would like to go up to see her sister in our October half term. I'm trying to work out if I can afford it.

We stayed in a travel lodge but it was a bit out of town. There is one in town but we had the car with us and needed parking. I rung the university to see if they let out rooms but they said no. Hope things are going well for her, Lydia spent £10 her first week because of all the food included in the cu events.

Perhaps try a hostel? A lot of the YHA/SYHA ones are aiming more at families and such these days, not just the backpacking crowd. You can usually get a private room, and it would have the advantage of self-catering.
Have you checked if it's cheaper to buy your train tickets in pieces? Sometimes it's cheaper to buy tickets from A to B and B to C, rather than A to C. Why, I don't know...
Hello Morgan, I have just chanced on your blog while browsing. By coincidence I'm an Aberdeen graduate, although that was 30 years ago. I loved every minute of my time there, but of course the city has changed since then. However I was asking a friend who has just moved from Aberdeen where she would recommend to stay that was reasonable, on behalf of a relative, and she suggested the following:
The Adelphi Guest House on Whinhill Road in Ferryhill - rooms are £35 a night if you don't mind sharing a bathroom, and £45 for ensuite. 10 minute walk to Union Street from where there are buses to Old Aberdeen, presuming your daughter is at Aberdeen rather than RGU. Old-fashioned decor, but nice breakfast, perfectly clean, quiet, good value for Aberdeen. If they're full for when you want to visit there are other B&Bs on Whinhill Road and on Bon Accord Street (the same street; it changes names) and the owner might be able to recommend a place.
I hope your daughter is enjoying Aberdeen so far - at least it's been dry for Freshers' Week. It's a long way to go from where you are! My two stayed in Scotland - son graduate from Glasgow last year and is now looking for work in Australia, and daughter is at another ancient Scottish university.

Thank you ALL so much for your really welcome hints and tips! I am sure we will find somewhere to stay - she is going to be there for 4 years so we have plenty of time to try out a variety of accommodations!
