June's Challenge

The first of June and time to reveal this month's challenge........

I am going to learn to crochet this month, and my aim is to have created something from crochet by the end of the month.  Perhaps nothing as complicated as this, though!

This has been a vague "something I want to do in 2013" kind of aim for a while, so I thought that I needed to make it a more concrete target, and having slipped the latest hat off the knitting needles last night, I think that now is the time to begin!

This lady on Youtube seems to know what she is talking about so I'm going to start here...

I don't have anyone lined up to actually teach me to crochet, so I am relying on what I can find in books that I might already have in the house, and the internet.

If anyone has any words of wisdom to share, I am definitely interested!

That lacy mat might be a bit advanced right now but it's not long before you'll be able to crochet something like that. It's a single motif joined together as you go; once you've done one you can do the rest; they are all joined on the last round, so if you did join them wrong, you just undo the last round to that point. For the time being, once you can do chain, single, double and treble crochet, start each row at the correct point and keep the sides straight, you are doing well and can tackle half trebles and double trebles; I know it sounds horrendously difficult but honestly, the hardest bit is the first few weeks. It took me ages to learn in the days before you tube so don't give up and I'm sure you'll learn in a short time. Just remember that English and US terms are a bit different!

Good luck. I can't crochet either and sadly my mum who was amazing at all things like that is too ill to teach me now. It's something on my "to do list" also.

You'll soon be 'hooked'!!! Try something easy to start with, like 'granny squares' you can use the cheapest wool and they still look good!! Pop over to see Lucy at attic24 or bunny mummy blogs for inspiration!! Once you have mastered crocheting, it is a very soothing pastime!! good luck

So excited for you! I subscribe to Simply Crochet and would be happy to lend them to you- they are one of my two guilty pleasures- the other one being the ARt of Quilting mag!!! I found youtube to be the best way of learning. This link also helped me with granny squares: http://www.littletinbird.co.uk/basic-granny-square-pattern/

Let me know if you want to borrow the mags- xxxx

I learned when I went to Belfast 2 years ago [thanks Catherine, of Lids and Capers] and found the Nikki Trench Book REALLY useful, easy to follow. Details here http://angalmond.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/on-roll.html Also got set of inexpensive hooks from amazon

Start simple [I did a granny square which grew into a blanket] and then you'll find it easy to progress to harder stuff

have fun - blessings x

Lucy at Attic 24 has some great simple patterns. She has tutorials with lots of pics so easy to see what you should be doing. xx
