I could easily have done a grocery shop on Sunday, but that would have been cheating, in the spirit of stocking up for the event. I didn't want to do that, and so the first shopping has come in at £23.90 - ever so slightly over budget for the week, but we had run out of a lot of things!!
2kg frozen veg (mixed cauliflower, broccoli and carrots) 1.98
335g bunch of fresh broccoli x 2 = 1.50
Grapes = 2.00
2 cauliflowers for 1.00
Bananas 1.00
Potatoes 2.00
Braeburn apples, 2 @ 1.80 = 3.60
Cheddar 2.50
Mushrooms 0.97
Carrots 1.00
Ham 2.00
Assorted other cheese 4.35 (Babybels etc)
I would have taken a photo of this little haul, but we have started eating it already!
The menu plan for the week has looked like this:
Tuesday - Toad in the Hole or plain sausages with veg
Wednesday - spaghetti bolognese with carrots & broccoli on the side
Thursday - Tuna pasta bake with veg
Friday - Slowcooker chicken [for after gym]
Saturday - leftover chicken with vegetable risotto
Sunday - Home made pizza/Haddock and veg
I have the makings of all of this in the house, either in the stores or in the fridge/freezer, so no more shopping is necessary - thank goodness - and I will be making plans to shop alone next week, somehow!

Good luck with your using up.
I really like the look of your weekly menu.
What recipe do you use for your tuna pasta bake?
Sft x
@Sft - it is a use-it-up/bung-it-in kind of recipe, which centres around a can of condensed soup, usually chicken or mushroom (from AF), some pasta and a tin of tuna. Whatever veg is available is also included! Heat everything up, cook the pasta, combine all the ingredients, and serve. Simples, as the meerkat would say!
haven't had toad in the hole in a while, need to make that sometime.

Sounds like a lovely menu plan. How useful do you find a slow cooker? Is it more fuel efficient than doing a casserole in the oven?
@Lesley - Yes, my little energy monitor hardly notices that the slow cooker is on, whereas the oven sends it sky high! I pop the chicken in there in the morning, just before 9am usually, along with some powdered stock and water, and maybe a chopped onion, and we have a wonderful aroma in the house all day, as well as the benefit of beautifully moist and tender cooked chicken anytime we want to eat it after about 5pm - and it is fine left longer. The meat just falls apart from the bones and is lovely.
When I do casserole/stew type meals in there, I do find that I have a tendency to put too much water in, so sometimes I remove the portions for that day and boil it up in a saucepan with some cornflour just before serving to thicken it, but that is the work of a minute or two, and I will get it right one day and not need to do that! I can also make dumplings and they cook beautifully in there in the last half hour.
I would definitely recommend a slow cooker to anyone!
@Gill - Toad in the Hole is a wonderfully cheap and filling meal for growing kids and the FH. The EFG just has the sausages, and I can't eat it anyway because of the flour and milk in the batter, but it is a definite favourite here with those who can eat it, and with a couple of little friends of the YFG who come to tea regularly - they often ask for it if given a choice!
